MassDOT to re-bid service plaza contract
Scandal plagued process involved an Irish company and local partner Suffolk Construction
BREAKING: MassDOT board voted today to re-bid the scandal plagued 30 year service plaza contract.
Timing of the new RFP will likely stretch out the final award until after the 2026 election. MassDOT plans to extend existing leases and review entire bid process.
Global Partners, a Waltham based company which lost the orginal bid to Applegreen/Suffolk Construction, plans to re-bid and welcomed the MassDOT decision.
Mark Romaine, Chief Operating Officer, Global Partners said in a statement:
“We welcome MassDOT’s decision to rebid the Service Plaza contract, reflecting a shared commitment to transparency and delivering the best outcome for the Commonwealth. At the same time, the reality is clear: until a new operator is selected and agreements are finalized, travelers will continue to face aging facilities, limited food and convenience options, and stalled investment. Without a master tenant ready to make significant capital commitments and bring a new vision to life, many of these plazas will remain in decline, with no certainty of when real improvements will be seen.”
